NaNoWriMo: Chapter One Scene Two
I decided to share the first 250 words of each scene. There’s a reason I decided on scenes and who knows? I may change my mind. But it’ll give everyone a better taste of the novel and that’s pretty cool, right? Leave a comment with any thoughts, I’d love to hear some feedback!
Bonus points for the aesthetic banners? All images are from Unsplash and part of my collections for each location, so this one’s for the capitol city, Hagia Sorva.
Brenden’s self-control extended to polite goodbyes before they exited the shop. The door closed behind them and he turned at once to Catori, his composure fraying. “Can we go to the toy store? Can we?”
She laughed and nodded. “Yes, sweetheart, we can go to the toy store.”
He let out a cry of delight and bounced in place until Catori held her hand out for him to take. He bounced alongside her then, eager for the toy store, and Catori guided her son through the streets and back into the richer parts of town where the sight of them wasn’t so strange. She had a very specific toy shop in mind—the same one Ziva and Cyrus took her to when she was ten.
A line of guards stood outside the toy shop in polished breastplates with black cloaks hanging from their shoulders. As Catori approached the store with Brenden at her side, they shifted to bar the door.
“No one may enter while my lady shops,” one of the guards said, his voice gruff.
Catori arched a single brow. “That’s a little ridiculous,” she said. “Come now, we only want the same privilege. I’m no threat to your lady.”
“Those are my orders,” he said. “You will not enter.”
Her irritation rose and she regarded the men before her with a cool stare. “I’d like to see you try to stop me,” she muttered. Brenden earned this trip and Catori wasn’t about to choose another shop because some haughty lady thought herself better than everyone else.
