New Manuscript, October Plans… & Coffee!
We did it!! We finished a second manuscript!! The Unbeaten has been finished!! BREAK OUT THAT CHAMPAGNE!!
Well, the first draft is finished. We’ve been working on this for quite a while now, much longer than the first. It’s been feathered with shitty things happening, too. We wrote out The Unbroken pretty quickly, then immediately went on to The Unbeaten. Somewhere in there was heartbreak, bad times, a lot of frustration, and Fabian (my co-author) moving to Oregon. There was a period of maybe 2-3 months where we didn’t write a single word. Getting to the end of this manuscript is legitimately a cause for celebration.
AND IT’S GORGEOUS AND BEAUTIFUL AND PERFECT AND– 159k words?!
Given that The Unbroken was 156k in its first draft, I guess that’s not so bad. But it took me a solid month of editing to get it down to something reasonable (103k) and even that’s… possibly pushing reasonable (though not for adult fantasy I guess?)
By the way, when I say a solid month, I mean I sat down all day everyday and worked on that beautiful piece of awesome. It’s kind of the only perk of being between jobs and at that cross-road where you have to decide if college is worth the effort.
In its unedited form, my writing is wordy and a little rambling and I get lost in character’s heads sometimes. I also get lost in minor, everyday details. I was an anthropology major for a time and the day-to-day details intrigue me. I forget that’s really only me and most people don’t want that in their books. Honestly, I might love to know how shaving and personal hygiene works in this world, but no one else does and there doesn’t need to be five paragraphs on it.
Anyway, I’m now facing the sad fact that I have to cut a novel out of a novel. (I’m going to need a looooot of coffee.) And a lot of the stuff that’s going to be cut is fluffy stuff that I love, but that’s totally unnecessary for the book/plot, so the only one that’s going to want to cry is me. This is also why I have two separate Google Docs specifically for smut & cut scenes.
Yeah, you read that right. I fanfiction my own work.
Anyway! Now that DVpit and Sonofapitch are over, I think it’s time to shift things a little. Fabian and I are tossing around a YA scifi idea that’s really cool and I’m itching to write it for NaNoWriMo, so I’d like to get that ready. If not that, then I have an idea for a YA steampunk-ish book with magic and fun things that I can write instead (but I really I want to do the scifi idea.) I also have an LGBT idea that’s been gathering dust, set in a post-apocalyptic world, with lesbians and bisexuals posing as nuns.
As you can see, there’s a few different things rattling around in my head right now. The problem is narrowing it down to which one I should write first!
So October is definitely going to be a planning month. Also, if anyone’s looking for a critique partner, hit me up, I’ve got two fantasy manuscripts, a lot of coffee, and a co-author willing to pitch in, too! TWO partners for the price of one! Even if it’s just me, I think I’m pretty great. Sometimes.
I also promised myself at least one full week of vegging out on SWTOR. Starting today. I’m so far not doing that, but I’m actually planning on logging in tonight when people are more active. We’ll see how that goes lol.
By the way, my co-author wrote the epilogue for this second manuscript and oh my god, it’s so goooood. At some point I’ll have to make a post about our dynamic. Really, we work very well together and Fabian is so much more than just a co-author. He’s goddamn brilliant.
So, October heralds new beginnings! I’m really excited right now and I can’t wait to get started. NaNoWriMo needs to get here faster, screw plotting I want to write!! Yeah, I’m a bit of a pantser. Also! There’s a Twitter post from me right over here with a poll to help me decide what to write for NaNoWriMo. If anyone wants to help me out a little, I’d love you 5ever. 🙂
Have a spoopy day, everyone!
